Biggest Loser

Did anyone else catch this show last night on NBC. I was looking for Father of the Pride and Scrubs and was drawn in for the last part of the show. There are so many things wrong with what they are doing to these people and what they are showing their viewing audience.

Basically there are two teams, each with a different diet (both seem to focus more on the low carb craze- a whole other rant in itself!) and fitness routine.
Jillian gathered her Red Team in the kitchen and explained the "Eat Less" Diet. It was as simple as this:

Burn more calories than you take in
High protein, high fiber, low carb meals
Portion control

"If you cheat," Jillian warned, "don't lie to me."

Over in Bob's kitchen, he explained the "Eat More" diet.

The goals are:
Deal with hunger before it happens
4-6 planned meals a day
High-volume, low-calorie, low-carb eating

After the first week they weighed everyone to see how much weight they lost. These people had lost between 5 and 22 pounds!!! IN ONE WEEK! How is that healthy???? And the people that only lost 5 pounds were getting upset with themselves because they didn't lose as much as the others, ignoring the fact that they were only starting out around 170 instead of 250+++. Then they calculate which team lost the least amount of pounds, and then that team has to vote someone off??? What does this accomplish? How is this helping anyone? Oh look, I didn't lose as much water weight as this person so now I have to go home??? And you have to love comments like these:
Aaron was next and voted for Dana, because he didn't think she had enough weight to lose.

*rolls eyes* I just hate the message that this show is sending to people. It's NOT healthy to loose that much weight in such a short amount of time! But it's okay because....
*Our contestants were supervised by doctors while participating in the show, and their diet and exercise regimen was tailored to their medical status and their specific needs. Consult with your own doctor before embarking on any diet or exercise program.

I was so annoyed after watching the weigh-ins at the end that I had to change the channel, couldn't stand to see it dragged out for an additional 20 min for them to decide who will be kicked off...
I have one word for this show... BULLSHIT!

Hello just stumbled on your blog through blog explosion. I missed that show but I have to agree that is an absurd thing to do. Different people lose different amounts of weight depending on so many different things. I totally agree with you.

I watched the show and was in the floor doing sit-ups about 15 minutes in to it because I felt motivated. To be honest, I think this is the only reality show worth a crap. The point is not to find a short-term marriage partner for yourself or you family, it's not to gain money, it's not to make a fool of anyone, it's to have obese people lose weight.

As the voting went down, I was going to be mad if the team didn't select Dana. It's a GAME SHOW and the point is to WIN, which is based on cumulative points lost. No offense but Dana and the other slimmer girls were destined to be voted off first before they ever got there. It's a compliment of sorts.

That said - all reality shows suck ass. They exploit people, pick and choose clips to put people in the most dramatic light and sell it to us in a pretty wrapper. We sit and watch, remote in one hand and bag of chips in the other.

At least with this one, the losers take home the knowledge and skills to eat better and exercise, and the self-confidence to know they can get in shape.

See, this show came up on one of my weightloss lists. Just from the commercials, I couldn't bring myself to watch it... It just didn't look like it going to do good things for over weight people! (stopping by thanks to Blogexplosion)

I agree wholeheartedly with you. It's gotten to the point where I can hardly stand to watch TV....
